Bassinets are the best option if you have a small house. Cribs can take up a lot more space. However, a lot of parents choose a crib for safety reasons.
Safety
Choosing the best crib newborn is crucial to your baby's health and well-being. You must ensure that the crib meets current safety standards, and is free of dangers that could harm your child during sleep. It should be strong and well-constructed, with no loose parts that might catch on clothing or create dangers of choking. tots and cots is important to follow the directions of the manufacturer for assembly and use, and to regularly inspect the crib.
Examine the distance between slats. It should not be more than 2 and 3/4 inches to avoid your baby falling over or getting their limbs trapped between them. You should be able to see and reach your child in the crib. If you aren't see, the slats need to be wider and not so close together.
The mattress support system is an additional aspect to think about when choosing the crib. It is important to adjust the levels so that you can lower the mattress as your baby grows. This will reduce the possibility of your baby climbing out of the crib as is a common event as they begin to crawl.
A fitted sheet that is secure enough to fit over the bed and solid and sturdy construction are additional security features to look for. You should also select a crib that has fixed sides rather than one with drop sides, which can be hazardous for your baby. You should also sleep in the same bedroom as your baby until they are old enough to sleep alone.
Finally, you should make sure that the crib is positioned away from radiators and windows, and that any dangling objects like curtains or blind cords are kept out of reach. You should also remove anything that could create a choking risk such as pillows or blankets. Be cautious when buying used cribs since they may not be in compliance with current safety standards, or have been recalled.
Design
It is crucial to remember that cribs may look similar, but must meet the strict safety standards. The majority of cribs we looked at were designed in a similar way to ensure the structural solidity. Most cribs feature circular bars with no gaps or rough surfaces that could entangle the baby or squeeze them. We also evaluated and rated each crib on the ease of use and to assemble. More parts can lead to more confusion, so we suggest choosing a crib that comes with clear instructions that are easy to follow to minimize frustration.

Mattress
Newborns are messy creatures, and a clean crib mattress is an essential. Spit-up from babies and diaper leaks can cause mattresses to become dirty and damp, resulting in mildew or bacterial growth that could be harmful to infants. Select a mattress that can be easily cleaned with a mild cleaner or a cloth. Also, select a waterproof cover to stop fluids from leaking into the mattress.
Look for a mattress rated for up to 10 years, so that it is suitable for toddlers. Many of the products in this review are reversible with toddler and infant sides which allows you to use them right from birth until your child is ready to move on to the full-size bed.
A firm crib mattress is ideal for infants, since it will provide the most support to their developing spines. A super-firm sleep surface also reduces the chance of SIDS which is more likely to occur when an infant's head sinks into a mattress that is soft.
When looking for a firm crib mattress, look over the label to be sure it meets Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standards. The CPSC requires that mattresses be tested for flammability, waterproofing lead, and other chemicals that could be a hazard to babies. You'll also find certifications such as Greenguard, GOTS and CertiPUR-US which are a good sign that the mattress has been examined for the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which can harm infants' respiratory and nervous systems.
The weight of the crib mattress is another factor to consider. Regular nighttime sheet changes require that you lift and move the mattress. If you have difficulty lifting heavy objects or aren't able to take on a heavy product then consider getting a crib mattress that is lighter. For instance the Newton Wovenaire is incredibly light at just 8 lbs, while the Naturepedic Organic Breathable Crib Mattress Dual Firmness weighs 20 pounds, making it the heaviest in this review. It is also constructed of foam instead of woven-core inners, which makes it much easier to move around compared with traditional coil mattresses that weigh more.
Assembly
A crib that's easy to put together is great for new parents. Find one equipped with hardware that is securely held with without sharp edges or rough spots that could irritate your baby's skin. Avoid cribs with drop-sides or headboard/footboard cuts -- these features aren't up to the safety standards of today.
If you decide to purchase a convertible crib, you will require a separate kit for converting it into an adult bed. Most manufacturers offer these kits separately. They're typically cheap, and they'll help your child transition into a larger bed more smoothly.
Many new parents appreciate the durability that comes with convertible cribs and are a great investment for families with multiple children. These cribs have been built to last, and they can be converted into daybeds, toddler beds, or full-size beds.
